SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY
Luncheon Centres
A total of 180,992 meals were served at the 9 luncheon
centres for the elderly, functioning on week-days in various
parts of the Borough.
Meals-on-Wheels
30,596 meals were served to old people in their own homes,
the distribution being undertaken by members of the W.R.V.S.
in Romford and by the Havering Old People's Welfare Association
in the remainder of the Borough.
Day Centres
The Council's day centres for the elderly at Mawney
Road, Romford, functioned throughout the year. Plans were
completed and building work was hearing completion on a second
Council day centre in Rainham expected to open early in
1971.
In addition, the Havering Old People's Welfare Association's
day centre "H.O.P.W.A. House" provided a wide range
of social activities for elderly people from many parts of the
Borough.
Elderly People's Workshop
The workshop situated at the rear of the Town Hall,
Romford, which has now been functioning for nearly 10 years,
continued to provide light employment for 32 elderly persons
in two shifts.
Entertainments
During the year tickets for 24 different operatic, dramatic
or variety shows were made available for old people, and
coaches were hired by the Council for those attending. The
total number of elderly persons who attended the 24 performances
was 4,747.
Holidays
Holidays for the elderly were provided as in previous
years by booking the Rogerson Hall Holiday Camp near Lowestoft
for a period of seven weeks, which provided accommodation
