Although the natural increase in population (3,738 births
less 2,126 deaths) gives a net figure of 1,612, the Registrar
General's estimate of 252,130 shows a decrease of 730 compared
with 1969. Thus Havering is one of the 30 London Boroughs whose
population decreased. In fact, the remaining two Boroughs
(Croydon and Sutton) only showed an increase of 50 persons each
and the population of the Greater London area fell by 91,130.
The birth rate now 14.2 per thousand of the population, continued
the slight but steady decline shown each year since 1965.
