the South Essex Crematorium, Ockendon Road, Corbets Tey,
Upminster, was 2,598 which included 1,223 from Havering.
The figures for 1969 were 2,476 and 1,203.
The Crematorium Joint-Committee (Havering & Thurrock)
have developed a further 1½ acres of land north west of the
present Garden of Remembrance, which it is anticipated will
accommodate the disposition of cremated remains for many years
to come.
Mortuary
280 bodies were received at the mortuary at Oldchurch
Hospital during 1970 for which the Council pay the Hospital
Management Committee the sum of £2 in respect of each body
received into the mortuary. The Hospital Management Committee
provide all the necessary labour, services and equipment required
for post mortems.
Common Lodging Houses
There are no common lodging houses in the Borough.
Disinfection & Disinfestation
The arrangement whereby the Council take advantage of
the disinfecting and cleansing services provided by the London
Borough of Hackney continued during the year.
Six families, totalling 26 persons who were either verminous
or suffering from scabies, together with their clothing and
bedding were dealt with during the year. These families and
their effects are transported to Hackney in one of the Departmental
vans which carries special insurance cover for this
activity.
Pest Control
The Council appointed a third Pest Control Officer/
General Assistant at the end of November and provided the
necessary transport and equipment for his use. On conclusion
of the necessary training this Officer will be able to assist in
the extension of our Pest Control Services, particularly those
which were previously undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries & Food, such as extermination of foxes, narcotizing
of pigeons, etc., etc.
