HEALTH VISITING SERVICE
In spite of a continued shortage of staff (9.4 out of an establishment of 36) health visitors are
making an increasing contribution to the alleviation of psycho-social problems. The responsibility
for the health assessment and skill involved in its carrying out, by working with the family is not
always given due recognition. Early detection of ill health and survellience of high risk groups,
require a great deal of time and effort. The staff are acutely aware that their function in the
prevention of mental physical and emotional ill-health falls below the desired level, because of
the high case load placed upon them. Nevertheless referrals from general practitioners and hospitals
where social or marital problems are suspected are always welcomed.
