Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Friern Barnet,
Middlesex.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present the Annual Report
for the year 1963*
The vital statistics for 1963 followed closely
the satisfactory figures of last year. The Birth Rate, with
376 live births, was 14.5 per 1,000 of population. The Death
Rate was 12.1, slightly higher than last year's figures of
11.0 but lower than that for the country as a whole - 12.2.
It is very satisfactory to state again this year
that there were no maternal deaths, the last such death occurring
in 1947 16 years ago.
The Infantile Mortality Rate, i.e. the number of
infants who died during the first year of life per 1,000 live
births was 21.3 as against 22.9 last year.

Two trends referred to in last year's report, a rising birth rate and an increase in the illegitimate birth rate are again evidenced this year as is shown in the following tables:

Birth RateIllegitimate Birth Rate as %of total live births.
1959 13.419594.36
1960 13.819605.08
1961 14.119615.7
1962 13.819627.1
1963 14.519637.7

The number of infectious diseases notified during
1963 was 379 as against 60 last year. This was accounted for
largely by a similar rise in the number of cases of measles.
The infectious sickness rate was 13.4 compared with 2.1 during
1962.
No cases of poliomyelitis were notified during
the year, the last occurring 6 years ago, and it is now 8 years
since we had a case of diphtheria.
