BIRTHS
The total of births during the year was 491, an increase
of 125 over the preceeding year. Of these 255 were males
and 236 females.
The Birth- Rate for the year was 13.2 per 1000 of the
population. The corresponding Birth-Rate for England and
Wales was 19.land for London 21.5.

DEATHS.
The number of deaths accredited to this district was 261,
28 more than in the preceeding year. Of these 115 were males
and 146 females. 160 deaths or 61% were of persons above the
age of 65. The chief causes of death at all ages were
Heart Disease 74, and Cancer 47,
The Death-R:te was 10.0. per 1000 of the population,
compared with a Death-Rate for England & Wales of 11.5 and for
London 12.7

There were 20 deaths of infants under 1 year of age, giving
an Infantile Death-Rate of 41 per 1000 births, compared with 14
deaths and a rate of 38 in 1945. The comparative rates for England
and Wales and for London were 43 and 41.
Of the 20 infant deaths 12 occurred during the first week of life.
9 of these were due to prematurity.
