Co-operation of Voluntary Bodies.
During the year the Children's Care Committee sent 56
children to Bexhill for a period of one week; and in 29
cases assistance was granted in the purchase of spectacles.
Blind, Deaf, Defective and Epileptic Children.
Every effort is made to ascertain children suffering from
"special" defects and it is very unlikely that any are missed.
Physically defective children are few, and so far it has
not been found necessary to establish an Orthopaedic Clinic
in the Borough, but arrangements have been made whereby
the Education Committee assume responsibility for the
maintenance in the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital of any cripple
child recommended for admission by the School Medical
Officer.
No difficulty has been experienced in placing blind, deaf
and epileptic children in certified special schools.
Sixteen mentally defective children were in attendance
at the Joint Special School situated within the area at the
end of the year, four were at residential schools outside the
district.
(b) There is one feeble-minded child not in attendance
at the Special School, but he is being kept under supervision.
(c) The Education Authority has no Special Schools.
Nursery Schools.
No nursery schools have been established in the district.
Secondary Schools.
The School Medical Officer conducts the medical inspection
in the three Secondary Schools on behalf of the
Middlesex County Council. This arrangement has the
advantage of co-ordinating the work in the Secondary
Schools with that in the Elementary Schools. 683 pupils were
examined during the year.
