Deaths
There were 746 deaths in 1955, only one less than in 1954 and
19 less than in 1953. The standardised death rate was 9.5 and that
for England and Wales was 11.7. The death rate for the Borough is
the same as the previous year which was the lowest since 1938.
There were 33 deaths from cancer of the lung, 1 more than in
the previous year.
Motor car accidents accounted for 5 deaths, other accidents for
12 deaths, and there were 15 suicides.
Of the total deaths 532 were of persons over 65 years of age.
Mortuary
One hundred and thirty-six bodies were received in the
Mortuary, and of these 12 were from Friern Barnet, and 26 from
Potters Bar.
Post-mortem examinations were carried out in all cases.
