Maternal Mortality
There was one maternal death in 1953.
Deaths
There were 765 deaths in 1953, 17 less than in 1952 and 112
less than in 1951. The standardised death rate was 9.7 and that
for England and Wales was 11.4. This is the lowest death rate
for the Borough for many years.
There were 27 deaths from cancer of the lung, 5 less than
in the previous year.
Motor car accidents accounted for 9 deaths, other accidents
for 12 deaths and there were 4 suicides.
Of the total deaths 521 were of persons over 65 years of age.
Mortuary
One hundred and thirty-two bodies were received in the
Mortuary, and 28 of these were from Friern Barnet. Post-mortem
examinations were carried out in all cases.
