Population
The Registrar-General has estimated the home population to
be 70,290 which is 100 more than in 1951
Births
There were 953 registered live births in 1952, as compared
with 915 in the previous year while the birth rate was 13.6 as
compared with 13.0. The rate for England and Wales was 15.3.
Stillbirths
There were 23 stillbirths, and all of them took place in
hospital.
The stillbirth rate for the Borough was 0.33 per 1,000 of the
home population, and for England and Wales it was 0.35.
Infantile Mortality
There were only eleven deaths of infants under one year of
age giving an infantile mortality rate of 11.5 per 1,000 live births.
This is by far the lowest rate ever recorded and I am of the
opinion that this record will stand for a good many years as the
scope for further reduction has now become very limited indeed.
The corresponding rate for England and Wales was 27.6.
