Population
The Registrar-General has estimated the total population to be
72,080 which is 1,120 more than in 1948.
He has also estimated the civilian population to be 70,760.
Births
There were 981 registered live births in 1949, as compared
with 1,086 in the previous year while the birth rate was 13.9
as compared with 15.3. The rate for England and Wales was 16.7.
Stillbirths
There were 20 stillbirths in 1949 giving a rate of 0.28 per
1,000 of the civilian population. The rate for England and Wales
was 0.39 per 1,000 total population.
Infantile Mortality
There were only 19 deaths of infants under one year of age,
giving an infantile mortality rate of 19.3 per 1,000 live births which
is a new low record for the Borough.
The corresponding rate for England and Wales was 32.
