SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES
OF THE AREA
The following are particulars of the work dealt with by your
Sanitary Inspectors during the year 1948.
Inspections
The total number of inspections made during the year was
13,975. At 1,000 of the houses and other premises visited, defects
or nuisances to the number of 3,581 were discovered, and at the
end of the year 3,022 including a number outstanding at the end
of 1947, had been remedied or abated. The work in connection
with 384 was in hand and 2,451 were outstanding. In order to
ascertain that the sanitary defects were being properly remedied
982 visits were paid to the respective premises while the work was
in progress.
As from the 1st July the free limit for building repairs on
dwelling houses was raised from £10 to £100. The effect of this
was a considerable reduction in the number of licences issued by
this department, 892 being issued in 1948 as against 1,664 in 1947.
Also, greater difficulty was experienced in getting builders to
carry out work in connection with sanitary notices, as the increase
in the limit allowed them far greater scope to select belter class
work.
The total number of inspections made in regard to each
section of work is recorded below, together with a summary of
the sanitary improvements carried out :
Inspections under Housing Acts 15
Special Inspections 3,011
Reinspections 2,883
Inspections of Works in Progress 982
Inspections of Factories, Workshops and Workplaces
(including Bakehouses and Restaurant Kitchens) 412
