The causes of death were as follows :

The infantile mortality rate was 27.62 per 1,000. The corresponding
rate for England and Wales was 34. The neonatal
death rate was 17.5.
Maternal Mortality
Two mothers died in 1948 giving a maternal mortality rate
of 1.8 per 1,000 births. The rate for England and Wales was 1.02.
Deaths
There were 763 deaths in 1948, 67 less than in 1947. The
death-rate was 10.75 per 1000 estimated resident population and
for England and Wales is was 10.8.
The number of female deaths was the same as last year, but
the number of male deaths was 67 less. There were 31 fewer
deaths from Bronchitis and Pneumonia, 18 fewer from Cancer,
17 fewer from Diseases of the Heart, and 13 fewer from Pulmonary
Tuberculosis, and there were slight increases from other diseases.
Mortuary
Ninety-four bodies were received in the Mortuary and 12 of
these were from Friern Barnet.
