ANTENATAL EXERCISES
These exercises are conducted with a view to making confinements easier. During the year 35
mothers made 229 attendances. There can be little doubt that young mothers derive a good deal of confidence
as a result of these exercises at a time when this is of great importance to them.
POST-NATAL CLINIC
This Clinic continued to serve a very useful purpose and the mothers attending for examination
totalled 237 in 1947 as compared with 164 in 1946 and 131 in 1945.
SUNLIGHT CLINIC
During 1947, 55 children and 5 mothers received courses of ultra-violet radiation and made 608
attendances.
DENTAL TREATMENT
Dental treatment is provided at the Health Centre for children under 5 years of age and for expectant
and nursing mothers. Three sessions per week are devoted to this work and arrangements have been made
to increase the number to four.

The following table shows the dental work carried out during the past 10 years.

MEDICAL TREATMENT
Children requiring orthopaedic treatment or treatment for defective vision and squint, minor ailments,
etc. are dealt with at the clinics provided under the School Health Services.
PREMATURE INFANTS AND ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN
There has been no change in the arrangements for dealing with these children.
During the year the deaths of 4 infants were attributed to prematurity.
Three illegitimate children under the age of one year died in 1947.
ADOPTION OF CHILDREN
Close co-operation is maintained with the Adoption Societies and the Court Officers. The homes are
visited by the Health Visitors and reports are furnished on their suitability for the reception and care of a
child.
CHILD LIFE PROTECTION
The Health Visitors are also Child Life Protection Visitors. The demand for foster parents far exceeds
the supply and this is not difficult to understand as the amount of money offered for the care of a child is
usually ridiculously small. At the end of the year 18 foster parents were looking after 20 foster children.
