POPULATION.
The Registrar-General estimates that the population on
the 30th June, 1938, was 65,140, an increase of 615 over
the previous year. As stated in previous reports there is
reason to believe that the population is really higher than
this figure, and I estimate it to be 67,500.
The natural increase, or the excess of births over deaths,
was 265.
BIRTHS.
In 1938 the number of registered live births was 927
as compared with 895 in 1937.
The birth rate is 14.23, the highest for ten years. The
rate for England and Wales was 15.1.
There were 46 illegitimate births as compared with 59
in 1937.
Nineteen stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of
20.08 per 1,000 of all births.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
In 1938 there were 33 deaths of infants under the age
of one year, giving an infantile mortality rate of 35.59 per
1,000 live births. This is the lowest rate that has ever been
recorded in Finchley. The corresponding rate for England
and Wales was 53 and for London 57.
Of the 33 deaths no less than 25 were of males and only
8 of females although the number of male births was only
slightly higher than those of females.
Eleven deaths occurred during the first week of life
and 15 during the first month.
