To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Borough of Finchley.
June, 1939.
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report for 1938
on the health of the Borough.
The vital statistics are excellent.
The infantile mortality rate—35.59— is the lowest
ever recorded, and for the first time on record the maternal
mortality rate is nil.
The death rate has fallen and the birth rate has risen.
The incidence of diphtheria remains very low, and the
number of cases of scarlet fever shows a considerable drop,
while there has been no death from either disease.
The death rate for tuberculosis, 0.39 per 1,000 of the
population, remains very low.
Throughout the year, and especially during the later
months, much time has been taken up by work in connection
with Air Raid Precautions, and in consequence the routine
work of the department has suffered to some extent.
I wish to express my thanks to Dr Russell, Mr. Franklin,
and all members of the staff for their loyal assistance.
I am,
Your obedient Servant
A. A. TURNER,
