Nuisances—Smoke and "Crit" Emission.
During the year a number of complaints were received
with respect to a nuisance arising from the emission of
"grit" from a certain factory chimney. The chimney in
question is connected to two large modern boilers fitted with
mechanical stokers and with fans to create a forced draught.
Subsequent to the receipt of the complaints the Company's
engineers fitted a special type of damper control in the flues,
and by careful adjustment of the fans and stoking equipment
the nuisance was practically abated. Constant care in the
management of the plant, however, is essential as
efforts to avoid nuisance from "grit" by diminishing the
draught in the flues has occasionally resulted in the emission
of black smoke.
Other factory chimneys in the district have been kept
under observation from time to time and appropriate action
has been taken in several instances with respect to nuisance
arising from the emission of black smoke.
Rag Flock Acts, 1911 and 1928.
A small quantity of rag flock is used in the district. The
supply of this material is obtained from manufacturers who
guarantee that it complies with the requirements of the above
Acts.
Rag flock is not manufactured or sold in the district.
Rats and Mice Destruction Act, 1919.
The above Act is administered by the Middlesex County
Council. A number of complaints have been received in
respect of premises alleged to be infested with rats. These
complaints were immediately forwarded to Mr. A. Chudley,
the Rats Destruction Officer for this district.
