These houses were re-visited during the year when the
following changes were recorded:—
Families moved to other premises 60
Number in family reduced 25
Number of houses occupied to capacity 56
Number of families who had obtained additional
accommodation without removal 11
Number of families overcrowded 17
The net result, therefore, of this special visitation was
to add 17 families to the overcrowded list.
In addition to the above, 35 other cases of overcrowding,
not previously reported, were discovered, making in all,
52 new cases for the year.
The actual position at the end of 1937 was as follows :—
Number of overcrowded families (1st Jan.,
1937) 63
Number of new cases recorded during 1937 52
— 115
Number of families relieved during 1937 72
Number of cases outstanding at end of 1937 43
Entries in Rent Books.
At the commencement of 1937, it was estimated that
there were in the Borough about 4,000 houses respecting
which no application had been received from the owners
and others for information as to the permitted number of
persons in relation to the houses for sleeping.
It was therefore decided to visit all houses in the district
which had not already been dealt with and which were known
to be occupied by persons of the working class and to
measure the rooms and issue certificates to the persons interested.
This work was carried out with the assistance of two
enumerators and was completed during the year.
