HOUSING.
The survey under the Housing Act, 1935, was completed
early in 1936.
A total of 8,523 families were dealt with and of these
126, or 1.47% were found to be overcrowded according to
the standard laid down in the Act.
Of the 7,969 families living in privately owned houses
97 or 1.2% were found to be overcrowded, while in the 558
Council houses 29 families, or 5.2% were overcrowded.
At the completion of the survey a communication was
sent to the owners and occupiers of dwellings in which
overcrowding was discovered and before the end of the year
many families were able to obtain adequate accommodation,
either in Council houses or in private dwellings.
Altogether 75 cases of overcrowding, including 11 in
Council houses, were relieved during the year, and the total
cases remaining at the end of the year was 63.
Some further progress was made with the Red Lion Hill
Scheme during the year, but it is not expected that any flats
will be available for occupation before the spring of 1938.
FOOD.
Meat and Other Foods.
Under the Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924,
9,828 carcases were inspected, and a large amount of meat
was condemned as unfit for the food of man. A full
account of this work will be found in the report of the
Chief Sanitary Inspector.
