It must be remembered that a small proportion of the
confinements taking place in institutions are emergency
cases, and also a higher proportion of complicated cases will
enter institutions than remain at home, but even when due
allowance is made for such cases there would appear to be
no doubt that, so far as the infant is concerned, it is safer
to be born at home than in an institution.
Only 4 children between the ages of 1 and 5 years and
4 between the ages of 5 and 15 died during 1936.
POOR LAW RELIEF.
During the year 561 families were in receipt of outdoor
relief, and the total amount expended on such relief was
£9,3013s. od.
Seven hundred and ninety-six persons were admitted to
the Wellhouse Hospital, and of these T38 were admitted
to the Lying-in Ward.
