POPULATION.
The Registrar General estimates that at the 30th June,
1934, the population of the Borough was 61,692, which is
an increase of 552 over the previous year. The natural increase
or excess of live births over deaths was only 54, the
lowest it has ever been, while the alteration in the boundaries
which took place on the 1st April, 1934, added 150 persons
to the population. The increase due to immigration into the
Borough, if the Registrar General's estimate of the population
is correct, was only 348. Surely this must be too few
in view of the fact that the increase in the number of inhabited
houses over the previous year was no less than 813.
I am convinced that the population in June, 1934, was
not less than 62,500.
Owing to the alteration of the boundaries of the Borough
on the Ist April, 1934, a second population, namely 61,679,
has been allocated for calculating the birth and death rates.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered during 1934 was
712, an increase of 41 over the previous year. This gives a
birth rate of 11.54 per 1000 of the population as compared
with 10.97 in 1933.
The birth rate for England and Wales was 14.8.
Twenty-nine illegitimate births were registered as compared
with 23 in 1933.
The number of still births was 29, giving a rate of 39
per 1,000 of all births.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered in 1934 was 658, an
increase of 66 over the previous year. This gives a crude
death rate of 10.67 as compared with 9.7 in 1933.
