Maternal Mortality.
In 1934 there were two maternal deaths as compared
with four in 1933. Both cases died in London Hospitals and
neither had attended the Council's Ante-natal Clinic. The
Maternal Mortality rate was 2.7 per 1,000 total births as
compared with a rate of 4.41 for England and Wales.
Puerperal Pyrexia and Puerperal Fever.
Five cases of Puerperal Pyrexia were notified in 1934.
Four cases were removed to hospital, and one was nursed at
home. All recovered.
One case of Puerperal Fever was notified. The patient
was removed to hospital, and recovered.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
One case of Ophthalmia Neonatorum was notified in
1934. The patient was treated at St. Margaret's Special
Hospital, and recovered without any impairment of vision.
Home Visiting.
During the year the Health Visitors made 4,296 visits
In connection with Maternity and Child Welfare work, as
compared with 2,606 in 1933.
Dental Treatment.
Expectant and nursing mothers who are in need of
dental treatment are referred by the doctor at the Centres
to the Council's dentist. Under the Council's scheme treatment
is limited to extractions and fillings, but the Voluntary
Association give assistance to necessitous mothers to enable
them to obtain dentures.
