During 1925, 163 children were referred for examination.
151 were submitted to refraction— spectacles
were prescribed in 80 cases and 76 actually obtained
spectacles. In 15 of these cases the parents were unable
to pay the whole cost of the spectacles and the Children's
Care Committee subscribed varying sums towards the
purchase.
(g) Ear Disease and. Hearing.
Children suffering from ear discharge and defective
hearing are dealt with at the Minor Ailments Clinic at
Bourchier House. During the year 80 children were
treated. 31 children were seen by Mr. C. Hamblen
Thomas, and his advice has been of the greatest assistance.
(h) Dental Defects.
2,988 children of all ages were inspected by the
Dental Surgeon, and 1,789 or 60% of these were found
to be in need of treatment.
856 or 48.3% of those found to be in need of treatment
were actually treated.
The number of children who obtained treatment
from a private source is very small and it is disappointing
to find that more parents do not avail themselves of
the treatment offered at the School Dental Clinic. By
inviting the parents to be present at dental inspections
and by reducing the scale of charges it is hoped to
stimulate the interest of parents and to effect a considerable
increase in the numbers accepting treatment.
