In 1921 the business of a soap boiler was carried
on for some months in a building in premises abutting
on Hall Street, North Finchley. The Council did not
give their consent to the establishment of this business,
but as considerable care was exercised and no nuisance
was caused, proceedings were not taken against the
occupier, as in a comparatively short time he obtained
more suitable accommodation in another district.
Nuisance from the Keeping of Animals.
During the years 1924 and 1925, and particularly in
the latter year, strong complaints were received regarding
the keeping of pigs on the Summers Lane Allotments.
Considerable nuisance arose from accumulations
of pig manure and overflowing cesspools which, apart
from the objectionable smell, gave rise to the extensive
breeding of house flies which invaded the houses
abutting on to Summers Lane. The allottees were
requested to keep the pig-styes and surrounding areas
in a proper sanitary condition and were advised as to
the special precautions necessary to obviate nuisance
and particularly to suppress flybreeding. As a result
of an interview with the Allotment Holders' Committee
and constant supervision of the styes, a marked improvement
was effected in 1925. This supervision will
be more necessary in the coming year owing to the
increasing number of new houses in close proximity to
the allotments.
During the summer of 1925 it was necessary to
secure abatement of a nuisance arising from the keeping
of pigs and the existence of extensive accumulations
of manure at Kenwood Farm, Hampstead Lane. Here
again neighbouring premises were infested with flies.
The nuisance will not recur since the pig keeping has
been discontinued and the farm premises have now
been demolished.
