Dairies, Cowsheds and Milkshops.
In 1920 twenty-eight persons were registered as
Dairymen, Cowkeepers or Purveyors of Milk with
premises situated within the district, whilst nine persons
retailing milk in the district whose premises were outside
Finchley were also registered.
During the five years 1921—1925 one cowshed and
7 milkshops have been closed, and in each case the
premises have not been re-opened for either the production
or sale of milk.
At the passing of the Milk and Dairies (Amendment)
Act, 1922, when re-registration of all retail
purveyors of milk and producers of milk took place,
improvements in the structure of premises or in the
facilities for the handling of milk were effected before
applications for registration were granted.
At the present time there are 25 Dairies, Cowsheds
and Milkshops in the district, and in addition seven
purveyors whose premises are not in Finchley are
registered for the purpose of retailing milk within the
district.
Periodical inspections at regular intervals of all
dairy premises are made, and generally speaking such
premises are maintained in accordance with the Orders
and Regulations in force.
There appears to be a progressive and increasing
tendency for the sale of milk from small general shops
to diminish. Further, the growth of the larger milk
trading concerns and the development of treating and
bottling milk in large well equipped factories for immediate
retail distribution has resulted in many small and
somewhat unsatisfactory dairy premises being no longer
used for the actual handling of milk beyond retail sale
in sealed bottles. This is a helpful advance towards
the production and sale of clean milk.
