Houses Unfit for Human Habitation.
During the period 1921-25, only those dwelling
houses which were in a very serious and dangerous state
were represented as being unfit for human habitation
owing to it being extremely difficult for the occupiers of
such houses to obtain other suitable accommodation.
The following are the houses in respect of which
closing orders were made, namely:—
Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, Murray Terrace, High Road, N.20.
Since demolished.
No. 7, Church Path Cottages, Woodside Lane.
Since demolished.
Edgell Cottage, High Road, East Finchley. Made
fit for habitation.
No. 1, The Gardens, Red Lion Hill, East Finchley.
Made fit for habitation.
Mansion House, The Walks, East Finchley. Since
demolished.
Of the families displaced from 1—4, Murray Terrace,
1, The Gardens, 7, Church Path Cottages, and the
Mansion House, 30 adults and 20 children were found
accommodation in certain of the Council houses on the
Woodhouse and Queen's Road Estates.
No. 4, Murray Terrace had been occupied for many
years in circumstances which were very similar to those
obtaining in a common lodging house. Unfortunately
the premises were exempt from the operation of the
bylaws and therefore escaped effective supervision,
owing to the fact that persons given accommodation
were received on the basis of permanent lodgers and
remained in residence on the premises for long periods.
The owner of the Mansion House appealed to the
Minister of Health against the Order made by the Local
Authority to demolish the premises, but the Minister
dismissed the appeal. The property has since been sold
and the building has been pulled down.
