The high-level sewer terminates at a point near Summers
Lane, proceeds along that road, and then northwards
along the Great North Road to Totteridge Lane, another
branch crossing the Great North Road and proceeding
along Squires Lane and in an easterly direction along East
End Road. A furthe branch from Creighton Avenue and
the so-called "County" roads proceeds along Church Lane
and Long Lane and enters the main sewer at Squires Lane.
Sewage Disposal Works.
The sewage of Finchley is received at the Sewage
Disposal Works at two levels, the low level outfall sewer
being 3ft. 6in. in diameter, and the high level sewer 21 in.
in diameter. The storm water is diverted at both levels
and the sewage proper is measured by automatic recording
meters and dealt with separately by bacterial treatment in
tanks and filter beds, 103 feet in diameter at the former,
and fifteen filter beds of varying diameters at the latter
level. The sludge gravitates from the bottom of the low
level tanks to two ejector stations operated by an electricallydriven
compressed air plant and raised to such points on the
site as may be required, air dried and dug into the land.
The sludge from the upper level tanks gravitates through a
sludge main and is discharged into sludge lagoons in which
it is air dried and then removed.
The effluent from the filter beds before being discharged
into the stream, which ultimately finds its way into the
River Lea, is passed through humus tanks for the removal
of solids in suspension. The total area of the sewage disposal
works is 115½ acres, of which 33 acres are leased from
the Burial Board.
Scavenging.
The house refuse is collected weekly by a contractor
who supplies men, horses and vehicles. In addition to the
weekly collection, a bi-weekly collection is made from
hospitals, nursing homes and certain other institutions, and
trade refuse is collected as required at an annual charge
of £1.
