Subsequently legal proceedings under the Food & Drugs
Act 1955, were instituted by another Authority and a fine of
£10 was imposed in respect of the like commodity which was
deposited for sale in that district.
Approximately 31 tons of Spanish onions deposited at
a wholesaler's premises were found to be unfit for food
and consequently confiscated. In view of the considerable
weight involved, arrangements were made for the onions to
be tipped at the; expense of the owners at a tip in County
Kent. The disposal supervision was carried out by a Public
Health Inspector.
E (3)g Disposal of Unsound Meat and other Food
As there are no sterilising facilities for unfit meat at
the Belvedere slaughterhouse, such meat is stained with naphthaline
green and transported by arrangement for sterilisation
elsewhere.
All unsound food, exclusive of the above is disposed of
by tipping with the town's refuse.
E (3)h Slaughter of Animals Act, 1958
Humane slaughtering of all animals in accordance with
the above prevails in the Borough.
The instruments used are the captive bolt pistol and the
electrolethaler.
The number of slaughtermen's licences operative is 15
E (3)i Fowl Pest
A change in the Goverment's fowl pest policy was
announced in July. As from 31st March, 1963, except in
Scotland, vaccination of birds is to be substituted for
slaughter, and compensation for poultry keepers will cease.
Subsidised vaccine is to be provided for two years after
which the full cost will have to be paid.
