E (3)b Exchequer grants towards cost of Meat Inspection,
Exchequer grants to Local Authorities are provided for
by the Slaughterhouses (Meat Inspection Grant) Regulations
1958 which came into operation on 2nd October 1958,
and accordingly the necessary returns have been prepared
for submission to the Ministry concerned.
The object of the grant is to assist those Local Authorities
on which the costs of meat inspection in slaughterhouses
imposes an unduly heavy burden because much of
the meat is not for local consumption. In this regard, proportionate
grant is applicable for the units of "export"
meat, this being meat which is in excess of the Local Authority's
datum figure, i.e., a calculation of units representative
of meat consumed in the Local Authority's area.
For the purpose of calculating export meat and datum
figure units respectively, one cattle beast is regarded as 10
inspection units, one calf or one pig as 3 units, and one
sheep as 2 units.
E (3)c Other Foods.
Considerable time and attention has been devoted to
the inspection of food in shops and stores, as a result of

purposes after being entirely stained with napthaline green,
The residue of unsound food, inclusive of tinned goods
is disposed of with the town's refuse, which is barged
across the River Thames, and tipped in Essex.
