"milk-ice," a commodity which must contain at least 1½%
milk fat and 7% milk solids not fat. "Ice-cream" is still
required to contain at least 5% fat (which need not be milk
fat) and 7½% milk solids not fat, whilst the newly designated
"Dairy ice-cream," "Dairy cream ice," or "Cream
ice," must have not less than 5% milk fat and milk
solids not fat. These three types must not contain any fat
other than milk fat except for that from egg or flavouring.
The 1953 requirements regarding sugar content have
been replaced by a prohibition of the presence of artificial
sweeteners in ice-cream of any description.
E (3) Meat and Food Inspection
E (3)a Slaughterhouses
There are two licensed slaughterhouses in the Borough
at which, as will be seen from the following prescribed
tabulation, in addition to other animals, the record number
of more than 40,000 pigs were slaughtered and inspected
during the year. As in previous years, a 100% inspection
service has been given and this is equivalent to the whole
time service of a Public Health Inspector, and for the purpose
of attaining complete inspection, one of the three
Public Health Inspectors as per rota, is engaged on
slaughterhouse duty for a week.
Slaughtering, which formerly took place daily, in the
evenings of at least three days, and on every Sunday, has
now been regularly extended to Saturday mornings, and
until legislation makes provision for regulating and stabilising
hours of slaughter, it would appear that the present
exacting situation will continue.
In December, the proprietor of the Sutherland Road
slaughterhouse announced his intention of retiring from
business, in consequence of which renewal of his existing
licence was extended to January of 1960. In view of the
low carcase output at these premises, it is not considered
that cessation of slaughter will materially affect meat inspection
duties because the majority of animals are slaughtered
at the slaughterhouse which will remain in use.
