staff employed on the premises. No case of insufficiency
has been detected during the year, but various improvements
have been effected in sanitary accommodation
already existing at office premises.
D (8) Street Trading
There is no established street trading in the Borough,
there being only two mobile stalls sited in the shopping
area.
No nuisances have been located at this source.
D (9) River Thames—Effluvia
Emissions of river effluvia were more intermittent
than continuous, that is to say until the onset of the longest
dry spell since 1893, when the odour became as nauseating
as ever. Especially was this so during August when early
morning mist enveloped the river-side area and preceded
mid-day temperatures of 83 degrees F.
During this period, low tides exposed a larger than
usual acreage of sewage impregnated mud with liberated
the offensive marsh gas profuseiy as daily atmospheric
temperatures increased.
In addition, it is found that aerial pollution from this
source is notorious for its distorting the colours of paint
when houses are freshly decorated. Vessels berthed at local
wharfs arc similarly affected and there is an overall tarnishing
of polished metal surfaces resulting in vivid green and
violet hues.
To convince a harrassed public under circumstances
such as these that the remedy lies not with Local Administration
is extremely difficult, and the date of completion or
the major works at Crossness Outfall cannot come too soon.
D (10) Flooding
During the heavy thunderstorm on Friday. 21st
August, flooding incidents were localised and minor
in character. In no instance was it found necessary to render
material assistance other than that of removing obstructions
from a considerable number of blocked interceptors.
