E (3) Meat and Food Inspection
E (3)a Slaughterhouses
Whilst the two privately owned, licenced slaughterhouses
are fully adequate to satisfy consumer demands for homekilled
meat in Erith, only about 5 per cent of the animals
slaughtered therein is sold in the local butchers' shops. The
differential proportion is disposed of to Smithfield markets,
and to butchers in other districts.
Slaughtering takes place daily, in the evening of at least
three days, and on every Sunday. Throughout the year, the
constancy of slaughtering at irregular hours has been maintained,
making considerable demands on Public Health
Inspectors' time. Having regard to the many other duties
which Inspectors have to perform, some prescribed limitation
of slaughtering hours appears to be urgently necessary.
New slaughterhouse bye-laws made under section 68 of
the Food and Drugs Act 1955 are dated 29th November, 1956.
