D (5)p Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Act 1952
and Regulations 1953
These Regulations have been in force since 1st October
1954, and it is now found that most fitments sold in shops
are guaranteed to comply with the requirements of the regulations.
During the year, many visits were made to retailers
premises and the probe test was applied to 106 heating appliances.
All were found to be satisfactory.
Special attention is devoted to heating fitments and
appliances which are sold in second-hand furniture shops.
D (5)q Mosquito Control
The erection of dwellinghouses in the Belvedere Marsh
area together with further industrial expansion in the ditchintersected
lowland necessitated keeping the marshland under
constant review. In this regard many of the watercourses were
treated with larvicide, and a good control was maintained.
D (6) Shops Act 1950
(a) Requirements regarding statutory closing hours were
generally complied with by shop-keepers during the year,
and no action was necessary in the Magistrates' Court. In
one instance however, it was found that a shop-keeper persistently
closed his shop at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays instead of
Thursdays. Implementation of the statute effected the
requisite reversion. The local County bird show was held on
a Saturday and not on Sunday as formerly, in which case
it was not necessary to implement sections 47, 58 and fifth
schedule which refers to the sale of merchandise.
(b) Improvements in connection with the health and
comfort provisions were as follows:—
Heating facilities provided 2
Washing facilities 3
Closet accommodation 5
Seats provided 6
D (7) Sanitary Accommodation at Offices
In accordance with the requirements of Section 46 of
the Public Health Act 1936, all new offices provided in the
developing industrial area were provided with suitable and
sufficient closet accommodation.
Various improvements have been effected at existing
factory office premises.
