D (5)d Closet Accommodation and Cesspools
Though the water carriage system has been universal in
the Borough for many years, 19 cesspools are known to exist
and these are subject to a cleansing service monthly by resolution
of the Council dated 10th March, 1942. The cesspools
requiring this service are in obscure positions which thus
necessitates the covering of considerable distances both for
pumping and conveying to the point of discharge.
In two instances, cesspools have been abandoned, and
the drains connected to Corporation sewers.
D (5)e Smoke Abatement
Action taken with regard to smoke and grit emission has
resulted in the following improvement.
(a) One hand fired furnace has been fitted with a smoke
eliminator door.
(b) At a coal discharge wharf on the east side of the
Borough, a series of sprinklers has been installed with
a view to consolidating coal dust during the process of
screening.
D (5)f Swimming Baths and Pools
(1) The Council's open air bath is situated in Stonewood
Road and comprises one pool of some 55,000 gallons capacity
which is now exclusively used by the Kent Education Committee
during normal school hours, and local youth clubs
during the evenings, and on Saturday mornings. Water in
the pool is heated to a temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit
by low pressure steam heating and is sterilised by the chlorine
process. There is a slipper establishment with accommodation
for 16 males and 4 females. Adjacent to the public bath is a
mechanical laundry which launders on behalf of various
undertakings which include the Corporation's Catering
Department, Works Department, the County Health and
Education Departments, and the "Hainault" Maternity
Home. During the year 83,806 articles were dealt with.
