to be regarded, more and more, as an integral part of preventive
medicine. It is just as worthy to prevent the death of a
child from burns as from diphtheria and there is, here, a
fruitful field for the endeavours of the Health Department in
collaboration with the voluntary organisations in the Borough.
It is too little realised that, in the country as a whole, there are
5,000 to 6,000 fatalities every year from home accidents and
that 20 per cent, of the deaths occur in children under five
years and about 60 per cent, in old people and, further, that
more children under 15 years of age die from accidental causes
in their homes than are killed in road accidents.
I wish to thank the Chairman and members of the Health
Committee for their support and encouragement and the
Senior Sanitary Inspector, the Chief Clerk and all members of
the Health Department for their excellent work during the
year.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
JOHN LANDON
Medical Officer of Health.
