(b) Various consignments of food rejected at the Bermondsey
wharfs were released for manufacturing purposes at
Erith. All such foodstuffs were inspected during the course
of such manufacturing process.
(c) During the greater part of the year, the district was
free of itinerant tea service waggons etc. One such contrivance
was installed on a site adjacent to a busy thoroughfare, where
the disposal of trade wastes was found to be impossible.
Joint action with the Town Planning department effected the
vacating of the said site.
(d) It was found that a purveyor of horseflesh labelled
"Animal food" was occupying a stall in the High Street, as a
result of which the requirements of Section 38, Food and Drugs
Act 1938 were implemented; the sale of this commodity was
subsequently discontinued.
E(5) Slaughter of Animals Act 1933
The above Act makes the use of mechanically operated
instruments a statutory obligation. By resolution of the
Council dated 23rd May 1938, the provisions of Section 1 of
the Act apply to sheep which are slaughtered in the district.
E(6) Food Hygiene
Food Traders' Guild
The first Executive Committee meeting of the Food
Traders' Guild for the Boroughs of Erith and Bexley and the
Urban District of Crayford was held on 25th May when draft
Constitution was submitted and approved. At the same meeting
it was resolved that codes of practice should be formulated
by the appropriate officers of the local authorities concerned,
and that the said codes should be approved by the Executive
Committee. During the year, the Executive committee has
met regularly, and much progress has been made.
At the end of the year, codes of practice had been formulated
and approved in regard to fishfriers, bakers and confectioners,
butchers, etc.
