D(12) The Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restriction) Act, 1939
The provisions regarding extortionate rents etc. are administered
by the Senior Sanitary Inspector, and during the year
1950, 130 applicants sought advice and assistance. The maximum
rent of houses brought under control by this Act is the
rent payable at 2nd September 1939, subject to certain
permitted increases. Houses let for the first time after the
aforementioned date come within the orbit of the Landlord and
Tenant (Rent Control) Act 1949, which Act provides for application
to be made to the Rent Tribunal for the assessing of a
reasonable rent. This Act also provides an umbrella for
control of tenants who share living accommodation.
Appended below is a summary of improvements effected
under the Rents Restrictions Act:—
(a) Rent reduced from 20/3 to 19/- per week.
(b) Rent reduced from 25/- to 11/8 per week and £69.6.8d
extortionate rent returned to tenant.
(c) Rent reduced from £1. 10. 6d. to £1. 3. 7d. per week.
(d) Several references were recommmended to the Rents
Tribunal under the Furnished Houses (Rent Control)
Act 1946, and the Landlord and Tenant (Rent
Control) Act 1949, with satisfactory results.
