many housing letters during the year from people whose living
conditions are very bad, and a sympathetic ear and a kindly,
word is often all that is possible in view of the points system of
priorities which is in operation. However, many cases were
referred to the Housing Committee with success, especially
where they involved tuberculous families in which overcrowding
existed, and where the infection of young children was an
important factor.
The development of the Riversite Gardens by the Council,
in providing opportunities for relaxation in the open air, is an
important addition to the facilities of the Borough and should
be a source of enjoyment and happiness to many people from
over a wide area.
In conclusion I wish to thank the Council for their support
and encouragement during the year. My thanks are also due
to the Senior Sanitary Inspector, the Chief Clerk, and all
members of the Health Department for much good work which
was carried out during the year.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
JOHN LANDON,
Medical Officer of Health.
