F(l)I. Eradication of Bed Bugs.
During the year 1945, dwelling-houses were found to be
infested with vermin and subsequently disinfested as under:—
Privately owned houses 24
Council houses 8
Presence of vermin in private houses is usually located by
the department's sanitary inspectors during their duties. On
every occasion removal of wallpaper, picture rails etc. is insisted
upon and measures falling short of this has been found to be
useless. The use of the blow-lamp and approved insecticides
is advocated and revisits are made with a view to effecting the
maintenance of the improvement. Owners and occupiers are
encouraged to report vermin infestations in which case, the
services of the out-door assistant may be obtained. For an
appropriate charge the assistant carries out the necessary disinfestation.
The cleansing and disinfestation of council houses is carried
out by the staff of the Borough Engineer and Surveyor.
All prospective and selected tenants for Council houses are
visited and a report on the findings is made direct to the housing
clerk. When household effects of such applicants are found to
be verminous, such material is subjected to cyanide fumigation
by Contractors employed by the Council. This method of
re-housing has proved to be most successful.
