section d.—hospital and ambulance
facilities.
D (1 ). General.
Situated in the area is a hospital of 43 beds, which is
maintained by voluntary efforts. The building is well equipped
and has a visiting staff of local medical practitioners. The
special departments are attended by a special consultant staff.
The services of the large General and Special Hospitals
in London are readily accessible to residents in this area.
D(2). Venereal Diseases.
A Venereal Diseases clinic for this area is held at Dartford
and is provided by the Kent County Council.
D (3 ). Children.
A ward of ten beds is provided at the Erith and District
Hospital, whilst special hospitals in Woolwich and other parts
of London are easily accessible.
D(4). Ambulance Service.
During the year under review the Ambulance Service has
carried 2,854 patients covering a distance of 28,948½ miles.
The efficiency of the service has been greatly advanced by the
addition of two new Austin-Lomas Ambulance vehicles, carrying
every modern device to ensure the comfort of patients.
These vehicles are fitted with Clayton Heaters and Lomas
stretchers with patent head movements and special locking
devices. The comfort of the occupants has been very carefully
considered in the design and the reports from patients from
time to time has shown that this is fully appreciated by the
general public.
Each vehicle is also fitted with Novox resuscitation
apparatus, carrying sheets, specially fitted flood lights for rear
loading portable first aid kits, drinking bottle and containers
for splints and accessories.
Owing to Ministry regulations still in force, the exterior
design is not of the stream line type, but is very serviceable,
and the vehicles have quite a pleasing exterior finish of grey
bearing the Maltese Cross on the sides and the Erith Corporation
Coat of Arms on the doors.
