E(10)h. Mortuary.
The Borough Mortuary is situated at the rear of the Erith
Parish Church in West Street, and consists of a receiving room
and a viewing room. There is accommodation for 4 bodies.
During 1942, 36 bodies were placed within the building.
E(10)i. Schools.
Schools within the District are regularly visited and defects
if any, are referred to the Education Committee. All the
premises are served by Metropolitan Water Board water supply.
Further details with regard to Schools are to be found
in the Report of the School Medical Officer.
E (10) j. Mosquito Control.
Considerable time and attention has been devoted during
the year to the above, and meetings of the Sub-Committee
representing the administrative Authorities of Barking,
Dagenham, Woolwich and Erith have been attended by the
Senior Sanitary Inspector.
A survey of watercourses and marsh land was vigorously
conducted and a total of 38 specimens were submitted to the
Ministry of Health's Malarial Officer for identification. Of
the specimens so submitted, Culex Pipiens was chiefly the tjpe.
It is said that this specie has increased enormously all over the
country, but, fortunately they do not attack man, but because
they pass most of their adult lives in dwellings where they are
numerous, they are a pest because of buzzing around at night
and so keep people awake.
Close attention has been paid to the ten 5,000 gallon
capacity N.F.S. dams in the district, and the necessary
precautions against breeding taken.
Resulting from the joint survey and deliberations of the
Area sub-committee, the Ministry of Health was negotiated
with, when in September, 1942, the Clerk to the Committee
reported that the Ministry could not agree to the use of labour
on an extensive land drainage scheme.
