Nose and Throat Defects.
Reference to Table II will show individual defects under
this heading.
Since the war the Royal Waterloo Hospital, who have
provided us with these facilities for many years, and with
whom our relations have invariably been eminently satisfactory,
have been under the control of the Emergency Medical Service
and unable to take our cases. Arrangements are therefore
being made for this work to be done at the Erith Hospital.
Ear Diseases and Defective Hearing.
Reference to Table IV will show that 139 defects were
treated during the year.
Dental Defects.
Up to the outbreak of war the Dental Scheme was operating
at 8 sessions per week. After the evacuation of the School
Children and the closure of the Schools it was found impossible
to secure sufficient clinical material to sustain this number of
operating sessions and they were reduced to 4 for school
children. At the time of writing there is the promise of reopening
of the schools within a very short time and then the
full number of sessions can be resumed.
I must add again, in such circumstances, that the need for
increasing these sessions to the extent of not less than a full
time equivalent. On the contrary if the schools do not re-open
but if evacuation takes place, it will be necessary to consider
the need of Dental Treatment of our children in the reception
areas.
Visual Defects and External Eye Disease.
The table under Group II shows the extent of the ophthalmic
work carried out by the Ophthalmic Surgeon. In past
years a brief description of the scope of this work has been
supplied by the Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr. N. Howard Allen,
M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., but Mr. Allen is at the moment in the
Army, and Mr. Oliver Walker, L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S., D.P.M.,
D.O., is carrying on this work.
Orthopaedic and Postural Defects.
Full details of the operation of this service will be found
in previous reports, a particularly full account having been
given last year.
W. Eldon Tucker, Esq., F.R.C.S., has been called to the
Army and his work is now being carried on by E. A. Lindsay,
Esq., F.R.C.S.
