E (3). Water Supply.
The water in this district is almost exclusively supplied by
the Metropolitan Water Board. The water, though possessing
a considerable degree of hardness, is of good quality and is
palatable. The supply in nearly all cases is led into the houses :
standpipes exist on a few premises only.
Routine examinations of such supplies have been undertaken
throughout the year with completely satisfactory results,
and arrangements are in existence with the Kent County
Laboratory for 2 samples of this supply to be taken monthly
for bacteriological examination from various points in the
district.
The following are typical reports on samples : —

Extensive sampling of water from the abyssinian wells on
the Belvedere marshes has resulted in warning letters regarding
the unsuitabilitv for drinking purposes of water from certain
wells being issued to owners and occupiers of the sites.
Statutory action under Section 140 Public Health Act,
1936, was taken in the case of one well, water from which was
reported as unsatisfactory. Police Court proceedings resulted
in a magistrate's order to dismantle the pump and fittings,
together with 11/- costs against defendant.
