A (2). Population.
The Registrar General's estimate of 39,800 as the population
for the year ending mid-year, 1938, is an increase of 1,560
over last year's figure.
This increased figure is likely to be maintained for the next
few years. Building operations during the year have shown no
sign of abating—the rate is still approximately 80 per month—
and it would seem that this activity will continue until all available
building land has been used.
A (3). Births.
During 1938, the number of births under the Notification
of Births Act, was 668, approximately 10 per cent, more than
those for the preceding year. Twenty-two stillbirths were
also registered, giving a stillbirth rate of 32.93 per 1,000 live
births.
It is quite reasonable to presume that whilst our population
continues to grow in the manner in which it has done during
the past two or three years this increase will be reflected in the
number of births.
A (4). Deaths.
The total number of deaths was 390, 206 being males and
184 females. This is after allowing for inward and outward
transfers. The death rate for 1938 is 9.799.
Compared with 193? the number of deaths shows a decrease
of 25. This is rather interesting when it is noted that the
number of deaths from Influenza in 1937 was 15 whilst during
1938 the number was 3; and the number of deaths from
Bronchitis 12 and 3 respectively.
A (5). Maternal Mortality.
Three deaths were recorded during 1938 under this
heading.
