A noteworthy feature of the year is the prominent place
Air Raid Precautions have now achieved in Local Government,
and the corresponding increased proportion that it has been
exacting of our time and work.
Infectious Disease.
The figures for 1937 show little variation in the incidence
of the common Infectious Diseases. An epidemic of a mild type
of dysentery is mentioned in the body of the report.
The only other noteworthy feature during the year was the
unusually large number of cases of Acute Poliomyelitis throughout
the country; this district escaped with one case only.
Vital Statistics.
The vital statistics of the year show a Death Rate of 10.8,5
(12.4), a Birth Rate of 15.8 (14.9) and an Infantile Mortality
Rate of 46.3 (58,) the figures in parenthesis being the corresponding
figures for England and Wales.
I would like to express my gratitude to the Committees for
their interest in the work of my Department, and my thanks
for the willing help of my staff on whose loyal support, the
success of the Department depends in no small measure.
I am,
Your "obedient Servant,
A. WALLACE JOHNS,
Medical Officer of Health.
