Provision of Meals.
Mention has been made, earlier in this report, of the issues
of free milk at the schools. In addition, foods, such as Cod
Liver Oil and Malt, are provided free in necessitous cases.
During the period under review, the scheme for the provision
of free meals has received full consideration, and in cases where
this assistance was thought desirable, the child concerned was
referred to the Medical Officer at the School Clinic for examination
and recommendation—14 children were supplied with
meals, free of charge, for certain periods during the year.
Uncleanliness.
During 1936, 235 children were found to be verminous
at inspections made in the schools by the School Nurses. While
this figure again shows a slight improvement over the previous
year's figure it is none the less a fact that it could be reduced,
and that a small group of chronic offenders is largely responsible
for its persistence.
The figures are given in Table IV Group VI.
Nose and Throat Defects.
The number of individual defects are set out in Table II.
As pointed out last year, a growing section of medical
opinion is leaning to the view that if tonsils are not giving rise
to secondary conditions they do not call for removal. Moreover
the part that enlarged adenoids alone plays in producing the
conditions attributed jointly to enlarged tonsils and adenoids
has not been assessed precisely.

Operations were performed on 61 children, 57 being under the Authority's scehme, whilst 4 done by private practitioners, were on the advice given at School Medical Inspection.

I am pleased once more to record the happy relations existing
between the staff of the Royal Waterloo Hospital for
Children and Women, and ourselves, with regard to operative
treatment.
