ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Pigeons
Section 74
Public Health
Act 1961
Pigeons cause considerable damage to buildings and crops. Thirty-two treatments were carried out,
525 birds being destroyed.
Wasps and bees
Although the control of garden pests is the responsibility of the householder, many people sought the
help of the Health Department. A free service is provided for those handicapped by age, infirmity
or other causes and who are unable to help themselves. Thirty-three wasps' nests and eighteen bees'
nests were destroyed, and 59 other insect infestations were treated.
Help is also given wherever possible when complaints are received concerning foxes, squirrels, rabbits
and moles.
Animal care
Diseases of
Animals Act 1950
All aspects of animal care including movement, protection and quarantine during outbreaks of
notifiable disease, are dealt with by the Act. Controls may limit movement and provide for the
cleansing and disinfection of premises and vehicles occupied by animals, but no action was necessary
during the year.
Diseases of
Animals (Waste
Food) Order 1957
There are eight pig keepers within the borough and their premises are inspected periodically. Four of
these use plant and equipment licensed under the Order for boiling waste foods for pig feeding.
Riding

Acts 1964
and 1970
At the end of the year there were five establishments in the borough fully licensed under the legislation.

Persons keeping a pet shop are required to be licensed by the local authority. Conditions relate to
suitable accommodation of the livestock, provision of food and drink, avoidance of the sale of
mammals at too early an age, the prevention of infectious disease, and fire precautions. Twenty
persons were licensed at the end of the year and their premises were found to be satisfactory on
inspection.
Animal Boarding
Establishments
Act 1963
In addition to provisions similar to those required by the Pet Animals Act 1951 a person licensi
under the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 must keep a register of animals in their char

inspection.

Radioactive

1948-1960
The use of radioactive substances, the registration of users, and the disposal of waste are governed by

Department of the Environment.

National arrangements exist for dealing with incidents involving radioactive substances, e.g. damage to
