Health Office,
Gentleman's Row,
Enfield,
Middlesex.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the London Borough of Enfield.
I have pleasure in presenting my report on the health of the borough for
the year 1970.
The report surveys in some detail the activities of the Health Department
during the year. As additional comment in this foreword I will say only
(hat the vital statistics for the borough compare favourably with the national
figures, and that the very low figure of three deaths from respiratory
tuberculosis tends to focus attention on the 185 deaths from cancer of the
lung and bronchus.
The report is presented in three main sections dealing with the three major
aspects of the work of the department — personal health, environmental
health and school health. The opportunity has been taken this year of changing
the appearance, style and format of the report, and in this I acknowledge
with thanks the valuable help of Mr. J. McNeil, Senior Administrative Officer.
Once again, the contribution of material for, and the compilation of, the
report have been dependent on the combined efforts of many people, and
I am indeed grateful to my deputy and to the other members of the department
for their invaluable help in preparing this report and for their loyal
and diligent support during the year.
I would also like to record my grateful appreciation of the support and
encouragement of the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and members of the Health
and other Committees of the Council and the willing co-operation of my
colleagues in other departments.
