In 1900 there were 52 cases of Enteric Fever, with 11 deaths,
107 cases of Diphtheria with 25 deaths, and 192 cases of Scarlet
Fever with 4 deaths, whereas in 1964, there were no cases of Enteric
Fever nor Diphtheria and only 37 cases of Scarlet Fever with no
death.
Undoubtedly, great progress has been made in Public Health
over the years but much work remains to be done, and the Health
Department of the new London Borough of Enfield, with responsibility
for Environmental Health, Personal Health, and School
Health Services, will enter an era of great responsibility and opportunity.
In conclusion I would like to express my appreciation of the
service of the Staff of the Health Department during a particularly
difficult year.
William D. Hyde,
Medical Officer of Health.
