It has been suggested that a critical level of atmospheric
pollution in the London area, in relation to its effect on health, is
reached when the daily concentrations of both smoke and sulphur
dioxide in the atmosphere are about 2,000 microgrammes per cubic
metre for smoke and 1,140 for sulphur dioxide.
Although this concentration of smoke was not reached during
the period under review, the concentration of sulphur dioxide was
well above the stated figure.
The information derived from these first year figures, is, of
course, of limited value, but they will, together with the trends in
the smoke/sulphur dioxide ratio, (which figures are given in tables
E, F and G below) give, in due course, valuable information in
relation to the progress made in Smoke Control Areas :

E. Smoke/Sulphur dioxide Ratio.
